Description

Height: 175cm (5'9"). Weight: 65kg (143lbs).

Hair: brown. Eyes: brown.

Yapp is a member of the Canoid species native to the Rufus system. The species is bipedal and morphically similar to Boluscans, but they have short hair over their entire bodies, elongated snouts, floppy ears, large teeth, and long tongues. The species can enunciate the Boluscan language without a translator, but with much panting and emphasis on the letter R.

Although Canoids don't need clothing for protection against inclement weather, Yapp wears the uniform of a Planetary Police chief. In his leisure activities, he wears loose robes to avoid disturbing sentients whose customs require clothing.

History

Yapp was born on the planet Rufus within the Emissariate of Bolusca, and lived there for most of his youth. During Yapp's 11th cycle, his parents' work required the family to move to 2-Ska. Yapp adapted well to city life on one of the most heavily populated worlds of the Emissariate. Canoids rarely travel off their home world, but 2-Ska sees enough non-Boluscans that his origins didn't cause him any issues, and his adolescence on his new home world was happy; he was well-liked by his peers. He had four close friends, with whom he would spend school vacations travelling around 2-Ska. Wherever they travelled, they seemed to always become entangled in some criminal plot, which they always managed to foil. It was during these vacations that Yapp began to think his future lay in law enforcement.

After graduating, Yapp joined the Planetary Police, where his career was exemplary and he rose steadily through the ranks. When the chief of police was due to retire in Cy. 1590, the government began looking for a replacement and Yapp's name was top of the list. There was some debate over whether a non-native should hold such a high political position, but the deciding factor was that everybody liked Yapp. Also, certain political figures who had a say in his appointment likely thought that his inexperience in high office would make him easier to control, to their benefit. They learned to their chagrin that he was too honest and decent to back down in the face of injustice or corruption.

During his tenure as chief, Yapp has been universally liked and trusted by his subordinates and by the general public, though not always appreciated by his political masters.

Psychological Profile

Yapp has a strong sense of right and wrong. He tries to see the best in all sentients, and is a good friend and ally to anyone who needs help. Some, to their cost, have mistaken his friendly and easy-going attitude for naivity, but he is a cold and unforgiving enemy to those who fall foul of the law. As a detective he was a cunning and tenacious investigator who won the respect of all who worked with him. As chief of police, he is supportive of his subordinates but expects the same high standards from them that he holds himself to. He enjoys most aspects of his job, but doesn't enjoy the political compromises he is sometimes forced to make.

Notable quotes:
"I smell a mystery!"
"I'll see what I can dig up!"

Skills and Abilities

As a Canoid, Yapp's senses of smell and hearing are significantly greater than a Boluscan's, which served him well as a police detective.

Yapp has excellent detective skills and excels at methodical problem solving. His years of front-line police work have given him the first-hand understanding that he needs to effectively direct the strategy of his staff.

As a police officer, he had excellent marksmanship and combat skills, though age and a desk job have diminished these.
